Eliza Sloane, who always fantasizes about being "Molly Ringwald" in one of her 1980s rom coms, believed her New York City life was on track until in quick succession she not only didn't get the promotion to junior executive event planner she all but believed was hers, but got fired from her event planning job, a job she loved, in prioritizing her artist boyfriend Tony over the job, and Tony breaking up with her after he got his own life on track with her help. Eliza is convinced by her best friend, struggling model Sofia Munoz who pays her rent tending bar, that she has had a bad track record in choosing boyfriends, in "taking in strays" to pick them up only for them to dump her after she's straightened out their lives. Seeing her own current path in life as a dead end, Sofia further convinces Eliza that they should drop their lives for the summer to live in her aunt's timeshare in the Hamptons for free while they pursue their to be rich husbands at the upscale Zane Hotel and Beach Club by following the instructions in the 1967 self-help book "A Guide to Marrying Rich", its author, Margaret Dumont, who is living proof that her advice works. While they hang out at the resort, Eliza, the practical one, realizes that they still have to work to put food on the table, the only jobs they can get being waitresses at Salty's Burger Shack, a beachside diner. Using the instructions in the book, Eliza and Sofia are able to manipulate two of the wealthiest and most eligible bachelors at the resort into relationships, Rich Hawthorne for Eliza and John Fuller for Sofia. Sofia solely has her eyes on the ultimate prize of John while she begins a purely sexual relationship with Ryan, a line cook at Salty's. And while Eliza truly likes Rich perhaps to the point of love in he being kind, considerate, good looking and wealthy, she may not acknowledge the fact of Doug, who seems to work every menial service job at the resort, as her soulmate, he who not only geeks over those Molly Ringwald movies like her, but always seems truly to be there for her in her time of need and is someone with who she is truly honest, which she cannot say about her relationship with Rich in following the guide to nab him.—Huggo
