Movie Parental Guide

nudity Rated PG for elements of scary situations and images. It is strongly implied a man is having a sexual affair with one of his co-workers. A woman puts perfume on her breasts through her open button up blouse. No nudity is shown. A man moves a woman's hair and breathes heavily on her neck. A boy, aged 10 or about, is shown fully nude crashing through a house. (His front is shown but is blurred slightly by motion and magic)
violence The leader of the witches declares all children should be wiped from the face of the earth. A witch is disintegrated into a pile of ashes (though it is mostly obscured by a cloud of smoke and sparks). A woman is turned into a mouse and then squished by a witch. Green slime squirts out; no blood. A mouse is killed with a bloody meat cleaver, though it cuts away before much of anything can be seen. A mouse has the tip of its tail cut off with a knife. It is later shown with a little bit of blood. A woman is missing a finger, with only a stump in place. She suggested it was because of a witch.
profanity Some namecalling, english swearing (bloody), and even a use of "bitch".
alcohol An elderly woman smokes stumpy cigars in some scenes.
frightening Whilst based on a popular children's book, throughout this movie is very frightening for children, but most of the horror is contained to the first 45 minutes. There are many disturbing suggestions and special effects with intense suspense. A woman looks at a child and her eyes turn purple. The woman later abducts the child. A father sees his lost daughter (the abducted child) in a painting. The child's voice is heard crying for her father. Very eerie and scary. Another woman looks at a child and her eyes turn purple when she removes her sunglasses. The child yells for his grandma as she tells the child his cries for help cannot be heard. The child is shown in obvious terror. Both of a child's parents die (offscreen) while on a date. Only a scarf is recovered. A child is trapped in a painting. A maid runs panicked and disheveled, screaming down a hallway. Later we discover she saw mice. Witches are shown taking off their wigs, revealing bald scalps covered in blisters and sores. Their hands are long and clawed, and they have toeless feet with square stumps. The Grand High Witch, played by Anjelica Huston, peels off her face mask and reveals an extremely frightening and grotesque appearance underneath. Her eyes are a glowing light shade of purple, her head is completely bald with sores and blisters, and she has elongated claws on her hands. Her skin is brown and looks as if its hanging off of her bones, giving her a skeletal appearance and her nose is extremely long and pointed. Very disturbing and frightening for children (and maybe even adults). The Grand High Witch obliterates one of the witches after she questions the logic of her plan to wipe out all of England's children. Very sudden and scary. An unlikable child is shown being openly mocked by a room full of adults. He turns green, smoke pours from his body, and he grows large hideous ears. He appears to have a standing seizure as his neck extends on a thin stalk, then smoke surrounds him. When it is gone, he turns into a mouse. A boy is chased by witches through a hotel. A boy, while running is grabbed by a clawed witch's hand. The protagonist is turned into a mouse, and appears to be trapped this way. A baby in a carriage is pushed down a hill and almost rolls over a seaside cliff. Parents scream and run after. A woman faints. Several women are shown with smoke pouring out of their mouths. Several women are shown in having seizures and changing into ratlike, frothy creatures. The Grand High Witch, after inadvertently eating her own magic formula, is transformed into a hideous and deformed rat-like creature. As her face mask falls away, the creature lunges into the camera, and is often shown in extreme close-up. This scene is very startling and is generally considered to be one of the film's most extreme and frightening images.
