nudity | It's implied that a man and a woman sleep together. Some early scenes take place at a brothel. No sex or nudity is shown. A woman does a strip tease as part of a vaudeville routine, eventually wearing lingerie. |
violence | Very little gore. Some people get busted lips or noses from fights Several fistfights and people being punched in the face or stomach. Near the beginning of the film, a black man has a bloody leg in an alley way. It turns out to be a con with Johnny Hooker for another mans gambling winnings/take from a gambling ring. A few scenes of guns being fired at people. These generally miss but in one case a man is shot and killed. In the climax of the film two men appear to be shot, with some blood appearing on their faces. In reality they are faking it and get up a minute or two later. A character gets shot in the forehead. |
profanity | 15 religious exclamations, ten crass words or phrases such as "ass" or "bastard," and 23 other instances of cursing. The word "nigger" is used three times in reference to black men, used once as a description of a white person who has black friends, i.e., "nigger lover," and another being used by an African American man to describe himself. |
alcohol | Some social drinking, although not as a prominent part of the plot and generally not to intoxication. In one scene a character is shown hungover. In another scene a character pretends to be highly drunk on gin. Some smoking in the movie, although generally in the background. No illegal drug use. |
frightening | There is an intense sequence at the end after two men appear to be shot. If this film were released today, it would likely be something along these lines: PG-13 for some violence, sensuality, language and smoking. |
