frightening | 'The Shack' revolves around Mack, a Christian who faces a crisis of faith when he loses his youngest daughter to a serial killer. One day, Mack receives a note, which he suspects is from God, telling him to go to a shack in the woods. There, Mack encounters a group of strangers who changes the direction of his life. The themes depicted would be better suited for young teens between 13 and 15. The film follows the protagonist as he works through his doubts about his religion. This includes an encounter where God manifests as three individual persons: an African American woman, a Middle Eastern man and an Asian woman. The protagonist is seen discussing Jesus's crucifixion for the sins of mankind, why God allows evil to exist and why Christians should forgive the sins of others. These theological issues are explored in depth and some maturity would be required. Therefore, the film would be more appropriate for a teen audience. Official MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13 for thematic material including some violence |
