nudity Sex is a big part of the story, and it's implied (mildly for some) all characters encounter it at some point during the movie, without any actual scenes shown. It's implied that Sam has been sexually active since age 11, when she was first kissed by her dad's boss. Although she no longer randomly "hooks up," she and others state how in freshman year people would get her drunk and that she had a reputation. Patrick, a gay student, tells Charlie his experiences. He and Brad have had a secret relationship, and we hear details about how Brad had to get drunk before "fooling around" or having sex. Charlie catches the two on a bed (clothed) just about to kiss passionately. We learn that Brad's father also caught the two at another point. Patrick passionately kisses Charlie, then breaks down crying in his arms. In Charlie's "relationship" with Mary Elizabeth, we see shots of them kissing, cuddling, and Charlie fondling her (clothed) breasts. Charlie later says that he was tired of touching her boobs. On their first date, Mary Elizabeth tries to get Charlie drunk for sex, giving him a bottle of wine, resting her head on his leg, and pulling down her dress, revealing her bra. This fails when her parents come home. Sam and Charlie kiss passionately a few times. Sam rubs Charlie's leg, which makes him nervous (for other reasons). While acting along with The Rocky Horror Picture Show, we see several boys and girls and dance suggestively. Boys cross dress. Patrick, in high heels, a bustier, and garter belt, sits on Charlie's lap, caressing his face. Sam dances in a bra and panties, and lets Charlie touch her breasts. Charlie is stripped down to gold briefs at one point. Patrick tells Charlie a gross (non-graphic) story about a couple from the high school who sneaked out to have sex one night. They forgot condoms, and used sandwich bags instead. It is revealed at the end of the film that Charlie was molested by his Aunt Helen when he was a child. Nothing at all is shown. There is a brief mention of "blowjobs."
violence We're told that when Brad's father caught Brad and Patrick having sex, he beat his son senseless. (We see the black and blue and puffy-eyed results.) Brad later spurs his football teammates to trip, torment and eventually start beating up Patrick. Charlie comes running to Patrick's defense and momentarily blacks out (as does the scene in question). When he comes to, his knuckles are skinned and bruised, and the bullies are all on the ground with battered and bloodied faces. After helping Patrick up, Charlie hisses at the attackers, "Touch my friends again and I'll blind you." Charlie walks in on Candace getting slapped by her boyfriend. (She begs him to leave and not tell anyone.) We see Charlie's aunt killed in a car crash (through a flashback) and Charlie worries that he wanted her to die. The setting and underscore make it clear that Charlie might pick up a nearby knife and hurt himself just before help arrives.
profanity 1 use of ''Fu*ked" and about 10 uses of ''Sh**'', 2 uses each of he** and a**. God and Jesus are said on numerous occasions. "Jack off" is said once. The term "fag***" is said about four times and "bit**" is said a couple of times.
alcohol Mary Elizabeth opens a bottle of her father's Merlot wine in preparation for a make-out session with Charlie. Teens drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes at several parties. Charlie accidentally gets high on the hash brownies that are passed around at one of them. Charlie uses LSD at another party, which sets him on a hallucinatory trip. After a number of swirling and blurred scenes, the teen ends up passing out on the snow-covered ground outside. In fact, the only negative associations with the buzzfests is one joking comment about a guy being a "hapless stoner." And a mention that a girl got in trouble for watering down her dad's brandy. Charlie is seen taking prescription drugs (presumably for depression).
frightening The ending can be very emotionally upsetting and intense. There is a breakdown scene regarding Charlie, which is very emotional and strong. During this scene, a shot of a knife is shown, heavily implying Charlie was about to harm himself. He is interrupted before he can go any further. It is revealed a boy was molested by his aunt, but this is only implied and never shown. The scene where Sam and Charlie make out is an emotional scene. The scene where characters are making fun of Patrick and Charlie punches one of them can be emotional.
