nudity | 4/10 Dally asks Cherry if the same "beautiful" red hair she has is the same on her, then stops, and then after a second says eyebrows, which may be a sexual reference, but the joke is semi-hard to get so she doesn't answer. At the beginning of the film, ponyboy and his friends go to see a "beach movie" where onscreen characters are frequently visible in bikinis and other swimsuits. This was considered "eye candy" at the time the story was taking place. Boys are shown twice in their underwear. The back of a woman's skirt is pulled up by a greaser to reveal her underwear. The shot of the underwear lasts about a second. Several women are referred to as fine or beautiful. Throughout the film, there are several scenes in which men are shirtless or have their bare chest showing while wearing a jacket. |
violence | 6/10 There is a big fight at the end where people are shown punching each other in the face, throwing opponents on the ground and kicking them, and slamming each others faces into mud. A boy pulls out a switchblade and the screen fades to red, then you see a dead boy with blood around him. 3 boys go into a burning church to save some kids and when one is hit with a falling piece of wood and is knocked out, but saved. Later in the movie you can see him with 3rd degree burns in a few scenes. A boy is shot multiple times by police and is killed. A boy is jumped and threatened with a switchblade by a gang, and they poke the blade into his neck. You can see mild blood on his neck. Two drunk boys hold another boys head into a fountain and try to drown him. He survives. A boy dies after being burned. A boy threatens another boy with a broken bottle and a switch blade. A boy is yelled at and hit by his brother. |
profanity | 3/10 shit and son of a bitch said once each, a few bastards and damns, a good amount of hells and rare uses of wiseass, 3 times Jesus Christ. |
alcohol | 4/10 Teenagers, some as young as 14, smoke constantly and occasionally drink beer. Teenagers are shown drunk. Lots of references to drinking/being drunk. Cigarettes are called "cancer sticks" by a teen on one occasion. |
frightening | SPOILER: There are a few scenes that are frightening, although the entire movie could be seen as intense. There is a scene in which two boys go in to a burning church in order to save children, they get hurt. There is also a scene towards the end in which a very very large group of boys fight each other. It is incredibly intense and should be seen with caution if you or your child is sensitive to a lot of fighting. This movie was originally rated PG. This movie came in 1983 so PG-13 did not exist. Later on after the PG-13 rating came out it was re-rated. Appropriate for kids 12 and up. |
