nudity | Sex and Freddie's fixation on it plays a central role in the film. A man unbuttons a woman's shirt and plays with her nipples. Multiple (over 11) women are seen fully nude in an extended scene. However, this is not entirely sexual and part of a fantasy sequence. A woman is seen naked lying on top of a man who appears to be naked. At one point in the movie the Master's wife stimulates him manually (gives him a handjob to put it crudely), which seen from behind and the man orgasms with heavy moaning. There are multiple images of a sand sculpture of a nude woman, with nipples and crotch area visible. Freddie is seen simulating intercourse with it. Freddie masturbates into the ocean in one scene, but it is seen from afar and behind him so nothing explicit is shown. A character is revealed to have had an incestuous relationship with his aunt, and is shown to have had the beginnings of a relationship with a 16 year old girl that never got sexual. The Master's wife reads a passage from an erotic novel as part of Freddie's therapy, describing a sexual act in graphic detail. There are other sexual references scattered throughout the film. |
violence | Freddie becomes violent twice in the film, attacking cops when they arrest Dodd and later destroying the majority of his jail cell, and later attacking a man who criticized Dodd's book. He also attacks another person, but this is only heard from behind a door. During a drunken stupor, Quell grabs a mans' tie and they begin tussling. The fight ends very quickly. |
profanity | 42 uses of f*ck; many, however, taking place in one short scene. Also 4 uses of sh*t, a few of c*ck, 1 each of p*ssy, c*nt, and wh*re, and occasional milder profanities. |
alcohol | Pervasive depiction of alcoholism. The protagonist makes all kinds of alcoholic drinks mixed with deadly toxins and drugs, such as paint thinner and some sort of crushed pill, drinks them throughout the movie, and shares with many. He is an alcoholic and is drunk throughout most of the film. Although the film does not directly make judgments on Freddie's actions, the ravages of alcoholism are clearly shown. Period accurate smoking throughout the film. |
frightening | Freddie's drunken and sexual actions can be disturbing, particularly to those who have experienced alcoholism or have loved ones who have dealt with it. |
