nudity | There is a fleeting glance of of the bottom and left nipple of Ms. Miller as she enters a bath tub. There is an even more fleeting glance of her right nipple once she is in. Ms. Knightley's breast and one erect nipple is visible for about 3 seconds during a love scene before the camera diverts to a kaliedoscope type of lens which may or may not betray any naughty bits. There are a few other scenes where sex is implied, either via noise coming from another room, or shown with a blanket covering both characters. |
violence | There is one protracted WWII scene with much gun fire, a scene where one character is in a violent labor that flashes back and forth between her husband having to amputate a soldiers arm on the battlefield. A few light domestic squabbles with some slapping, or her beating his head against the floor. One scene involving a neighbor wrenching his rifle away from his wife, knocking her out in the process, and then shooting up the neighbor's house, culminating with him threatening to blow every one up with a grenade. A sailor kicks the hell out of Dylan Thomas who is left bloodied and lying in urine. A woman crashes a bike and cuts open her head, which requires sutures. It's WWII, there are several scenes where bombs are going off in and around where the characters are, though only one is particularly bloody. |
profanity | One use of the F word |
alcohol | There are about 8,000 cigarettes smoked during the course of the film. Every character seems to smoke, even in the bath, and, if memory serves, once during lovemaking. It's a film about Dylan Thomas. Of course there is drinking. NO drugs. |
frightening | The scene where Vera is giving birth that flashes back and forth between the battlefield amputation is very intense. One scene involving a neighbor wrenching his rifle away from his wife, knocking her out in the process, and then shooting up the neighbor's house, culminating with him threatening to blow every one up with a grenade. WWII is on. There are some air raids in London and some battle scenes in Greece. |
