nudity | There is no sex, but some partial nudity. There is a recurring line, "The day a guy can't take off his own pants is the day he ain't a man." A boy tries to take off his drunken father's pants off, but he does it for him. The father also takes the boy's shirt off. Champ is seen shirtless for a lot of scenes. Champ and T.J. decide to go for a swim and strip down to their underwear, T.J. almost reveals his butt, and Champ reminds him not to remove his underwear or he'll be caught for public nudity. |
violence | The film has some boxing scenes. A horse abruptly falls down and gets cut. At first, she's thought to be dead, but it turns out to be a superficial wound. We see the wound is bleeding. Champ gets mad at a man and begins beating him up. This results in a riot which leads to him being arrested. A man slaps a boy. A man punches a jail wall pretty hard. A man is beaten quite badly in a boxing match, he has some bloody wounds. He dies from all those wounds. It is VERY sad. |
profanity | A few "goddamns," and "hells," and "bullshit" is said twice, once by a boy. An old woman calls him out on it. |
alcohol | A man drinks alcohol and gets drunk. |
frightening | In the film's climax, Champ wins a fight but also dies from being brutally beaten. His son cries over his body and refuses to accept that Champ is dead. The boy repeatedly says things like, "Wake up!" "He's not dead!" or "I want Champ!" sobbingly. Other people in the room cry as well. With all that in mind, it's hard to watch without getting upset. As a matter of fact, the scene has been studied by Smithsonian scientists and tested among certain people and considered the saddest scene of all time. |
