It's South Africa 1990. Two major events are about to happen: The release of Nelson Mandela and, more importantly, it's Spud Milton's first year at an elite boys only private boarding school. John Milton is a boy from an ordinary background who wins a scholarship to a private school in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Surrounded by boys with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud has his hands full trying to adapt to his new home. Along the way Spud takes his first tentative steps along the path to manhood. (The path it seems could be a rather long road). Spud is an only child. He is cursed with parents from well beyond the lunatic fringe and a senile granny. His dad is a fervent anti-communist who is paranoid that the family domestic worker is running a shebeen from her room at the back of the family home. His mom is a free spirit and a teenager's worst nightmare, whether it's shopping for Spud's underwear in the local supermarket

Movie Parental Guide

nudity	There are explicit talks of sex throughout. Some viewings of a playboy magazine which teenage boys are clustered around discussing the merits of the woman's 'raw materials'. Kissing (on one occasion with the use of tongues). Characters discuss masturbation. One character is sex obsessed. A female teacher has an affair with a student. A teacher uses crude language regarding woman. Woman are objectified as sexual objects.
violence	During one scene, a light bulb cracks and shatters and Gecko turns around and you see a piece of glass in Geckos head and blood dripping down his head. This is meant to be comical though. In another scene a group of boys grab another boy and put his head down the toilet due to it apparently being a 'tradition' at the school when it is someones birthday. Later on the same boys do another 'tradition' of scrubbing a boys balls with polish and you can see the pained and emotional reaction of the boy. It is not meant to be funny. Gecko has a malaria attack and you can see blood dripping out his ear.
profanity	Multiple uses of god damn, damn, shit, hell Wanker, slut, etc. No F-Words. Some words do sound like the F-word but that is only because of their accent. 1 use of the word ct. Commonly misheard as "coward", but is shown in the subtitles as ct.
alcohol	A man is constantly seen getting drunk.
frightening	A character has many illnesses and eventually dies. This scene is very sad.
