Based somewhat more authentically on the Grimm Brothers' story of a young woman who is unliked by her stepmother, the film includes the talking mirror, a poisoned apple, and some ruffian gold (not diamond) miners (and they aren't dwarfs or cute). It takes place at the time of the Crusades, and depicts the attitudes of the wealthy and the peasant classes toward one another.

nudity 5/10 A man and a woman kiss. The same woman later on kisses another man. A man and his new wife sit in bed together, nude but covered: his bare chest is seen, while she is covered with a sheet to her shoulders, as a ritual is performed to sanctify the consummation of their marriage. One of the seven "dwarves" shows his ass to a girl shortly after she meets them. A few of the seven "dwarves" are shirtless when they are mining. A girl later sees one of the "dwarves" standing shirtless in rain and they kiss. A woman gets on top of her husband to have sex; no nudity is seen, she goes up and down, the husband moans. Some sexual references by a few men towards a girl.
violence 7/10 The first scene involves an accident where a horse-drawn carriage falls off a mountainside and the occupants are injured. In this scene, the horses and a man are attacked by wolves, and a pregnant woman lies dying; she asks her husband to perform a cesarean section on her with a sword while she is still alive to save the baby. Copious amounts of blood are shown. A woman's pregnancy is miscarried. We see the mother after giving birth, disheveled, in physical and emotional pain, and covered in blood. A bundle implicitly containing the baby's corpse is removed from the room and taken to be burned. The would-be mother goes insane and attempts to use necromancy to bring the baby back to life: we see a decomposed hand emerge and move from a bundle she cradles in her arms. A magical spell causes trees in a forest to fall on top of a group of people, killing a couple of them. Another spell causes a cave-in in a mine, which only some of the characters escape from. A teenage girl is threatened with rape twice. Numerous injuries are shown. A dog attacks a man. A sparrow is put inside a sand-filled hourglass and we watch as it is covered in sand until it suffocates. A man is tied up with ropes and dragged on the floor; he was intended to be sacrificed, but is saved. A young man is thrown out of a window and dies (offscreen). A woman with a disfigured face attacks a girl, who then sticks a burning candle in her eyes. A few stabbings, suffocations, beatings and crushings. The final battle between the protagonist and the antagonist results in the antagonist being stabbed and the protagonist is slashed across her face with a piece of glass (we see her bloody cut face); the room is then consumed in flames. Several people in a castle get "infected" with some sort of plague, and become dangerously aggressive.
profanity 3/10 Some rude language and sexual references towards a girl.
alcohol None. A man is said to drink a lot of wine.
frightening 7/10 Themes of rivalry between a daughter and a step-mother are prevalent; the step-mother uses magic to try to kill the girl. The robbers/dwarves are intially hostile to the protagonist, threatening her with rape and abandonment and deriding her verbally, but she stays with them for protection and they eventually become nicer to her. They are initially somewhat frightening in appearance as well. All of the inhabitants of a castle are stricken with plague and turned into beings somewhat like hostile zombies; the final scene ends with the castle consumed in flames. Total: 22/50 - Rated R for some violence, strong themes, disturbing imagery and some sexuality. Ok for ages 14+ with warning.
