Feb 23,1940
nudity | None |
violence | 2/10 Mild cartoon action: A cat hits a fox on his head with a mallet two times. The cat bashes the fox on his head, using the same object. A cricket falls into billiard holes twice. This is played for laughs. Children are shown throwing bricks at buildings, knocking stuff down, etc. There is peril throughout the movie. |
profanity | The word "jackass" is used twice - in reference to a donkey (although also alludes to a dummy). |
alcohol | 2/10 Smoking is shown: Geppetto is shown with a pipe. Pinocchio and Lampwick smoke a cigar. Pinocchio and Lampwick also drink beer. Parents should be warned that the smoking/drinking is done by children however the film clearly discourages it. |
frightening | Suggested MPAA rating: PG for mild action and peril and for smoking. The G-rating for this film is very outdated, back in 1940 the rating system was a little weird, it was OK to show violence and incredibly frightening/intense images to kids as long as there was no profanity, sex or nudity. By today's standards this is a solid PG/mild PG-13 mostly due to 3 very intense and emotional scenes (Pinocchio getting kidnapped by Stromboli, the boys turning into Donkeys/being threatened with a whip, and the escape from Monstro/Pinocchio's supposed death). |
