nudity | In the story involving a wedding ring, the main character - Richard - comes across his wife's ring at the pawn shop and decides to investigate into her disappearance that took place six years ago. Richard eventually tracks down Johnny; the man whom he believes has information about his wife. As Richard steps into Johnny's apartment, he finds Johnny masturbating to an erotic video that is being played on the television. In the video, there are three women and a man - who are all completely nude - moving around on a bed. While for most part of the scene the television screen is blurred in the background, there are several close-up shots of the erotic video showing the threesome in heavy sexual activity. This scene depicting deviant sexual activity is highly recommended to be subject to strict review, depending on the treatment and context. Over the course of the film, there are several instances of female upper-body nudity, with a single brief occurrence of female full-frontal nudity, depicted in a non-sexual context. For example, when Richard learns that there are other women who are held captive, he unlocks the barn and finds numerous cages that are stacked in a pyramid, with each cage holding a nude woman. Richard goes on the free these women from the cages and topless nudity is depicted as he unlocks the cages one by one. The women, who are freed, are later seen marching in twos towards the entrance of a carnival fair. As they march mindlessly towards the entrance, female full-frontal nudity can be seen briefly before the scene switches to show visitors' reactions. Henceforth, full frontal nudity is depicted in the film, justified by context and without gratuitous close-ups. |
violence | The film contains strong depictions of violence. For example, in an interrogation scene, Johnny is tied to the table and fishhooks are pierced through his upper and lower lips. His lips are spread apart by the fishing lines that are tied to four corners of the room. Richard threatens to use various weapons on Johnny so as to find out what he had done to Richard's wife. When Johnny refuses to cooperate, Richard picks up a hammer and smashes it into Johnny's mouth, breaking several of his front teeth. Blood smears across the television screen and stains Richard's shirt. When Johnny tries to talk, blood is seen gurgling in his mouth. This strong and realistic depiction of violence & gore is justified by context. |
profanity | Constant swearing of all sorts. One man gives the finger to another driver for cutting him off. Approx. 300 swear words, many of them f-words. Most of the swearing occurs during the first story. |
alcohol | A man snorts some drugs. The main story at the beginning is about robbing a man for meth. Some cigarette smoking. |
frightening | 'Pawn Shop Chronicles' is an action-comedy that revolves around events that occur in a small town where a pawn shop is located. The film is made up of three stories, each involving an object that was pawned at the shop, and how each of them is tied to one another as the stories unfold. |
