Paradise Road is a 1997 film which tells the story of a group of English, American, Dutch and Australian women who are imprisoned in Sumatra during World War II. It was directed by Bruce Beresford and stars Glenn Close as beatific Adrienne Pargiter, Frances McDormand as the brash Dr. Verstak, Pauline Collins as missionary Margaret Drummond (based on missionary Margaret Dryburgh), Julianna Margulies as American socialite Topsy Merritt, Jennifer Ehle as British doyenne and model Rosemary Leighton Jones, Cate Blanchett as Australian nurse Susan McCarthy and Elizabeth Spriggs as dowager Imogene Roberts. Basing his picture on real events, Bruce Beresford tells the story of a vocal orchestra created by the women in a Japanese P.O.W. camp, a classic survivors' tale extolling women's ability to survive hardship and atrocity through perseverance, solidarity and creativity.

nudity	4/10 Very mild references to sex. Some non-sexual nudity. Mainly rear and breasts, but there is one brief shot of full-frontal. All female, except for one rear shot of a man.
violence	7/10 Mild for an R. Several beatings. In the most disturbing scene, gasoline is poured on a woman, and she is set on fire. Unrealistically, she dies almost instantly. There is only one mild scream, and her corpse is not shown - during or after.

frightening	8/10 Some intense prison beatings, and the burning scene mentioned above. Less graphic than many PG-13 movies. Far less disturbing than movies like The Dark Knight, or Angels & Demons. Total Explicit Content 24/50 An idea of how accurate the TECE (below) is: 5-10 is a little-kid suitable, G-Rated type of film (i.e. Care Bears, Sleeping Beauty); 10-15 is going to be a little harsher, but not by much (i.e. The Incredibles); 15-20 could be pretty high up there like a standard PG-13 (i.e. Indiana Jones), 20-25 is going to be a high PG-13 (i.e. THIS); 25-30 is going to be a film most likely not suitable for anyone under 17 (i.e. The Town); 30-40 is going to be an absolutely, positively adults-only film (i.e. Inglorious Basterds) ; 40+ is going to be Cannibal Holocaust.
