Trapped in their New York brownstone's panic room, a hidden chamber built as a sanctuary in the event of break-ins, newly divorced Meg Altman and her young daughter Sarah play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with three intruders - Burnham, Raoul and Junior - during a brutal home invasion. But the room itself is the focal point because what the intruders really want is inside it.

violence One of the intruders gets badly burned. His arm is shown on fire as he tries to extinguish the flame. His face is badly burned. These injuries, of course, remain in view until he leaves the story, and he is shown to be in unbelievable pain. A man is shot in the head with such force he spins around before hitting the ground. The bullet leaves a gaping hole over his eye with a thick blood gush. There is an extended sequence in which a character is beaten and kicked until he is a bloody mess with a broken arm. He is at one point knocked out, and shown in great pain again when he tries to use his arm and is knocked out of his chair. In self-defense, a woman hits one of the intruders in the face with a sledgehammer and he falls over a railing. He comes after her as another man shoots at him. He knocks the wind out of her and begins throttling her on the floor. The woman's daughter begins stabbing the attacker in the back with empty syringes and he punches the daughter in the nose. As the girl screams in horror, the attacker attempts to bash the woman's head in with the sledge hammer but she is rescued before this happens. In self-defense, a man is shot through the head, the bullet comes out his eye with a lot of blood spray. There are numerous threats of violence (apart from those actually carried out) against a man, woman, and child as well as against the invaders.
profanity The F-word is used about 24 times . The S-word is used less frequently. There are a few instances of religious profanity.
alcohol To cope with her divorce, a woman drinks wine to excess and admits it later on to a police officer. A diabetic has to have an injection. In two scenes a man takes what is presumably cocaine hits from a glass pipe.
frightening The entirety of this film is a sensational but believable portrait of a home invasion by three men in search of hidden money. The men had not planned on hurting anyone and, as we soon discover, they thought the house was vacant, but near the end, the situation becomes increasingly violent, homicidal and intense. One of the men is shown to be completely cold-blooded with a psychotic temper, and another shows little regard for human life. A diabetic has a convulsing reaction to a drop in her blood sugar and waits a long time for an injection of insulin while claiming that without it she will go into a coma and die. Using ominous dialogue, a criminal implies he's going to kill a pre-teen girl because she saw his face (but he never ends up being able to try).
