nudity | 1/10 One kissing scene. |
violence | 6/10 Violence is minimal. In one scene, the younger brother throws rocks at his older brother. An antlered deer is shot and killed in order to provide venison for the dinner table. A dog and a wolf fight with each other before the wolf is shot. A dog is shot by a boy after he becomes rabid. Similarly, a cow must be shot when she contacts rabies. All of these deaths take place offscreen with only the gunfire to represent the deed. A pack of wild boars attacks a character (some blood). |
profanity | 1/10 Some name calling |
alcohol | 1/10 Some drinking |
frightening | 7/10 There is an intense scene when the older brother is hurt by wild hogs as he tries to mark them. Yeller fights with a black she-bear who is protecting her cub as well as with a cow who is protecting her newborn calf. Yeller is bitten by a rapid wolf and develops rabies. At the end of the movie, he must be shot and killed. This scene has proven to be extremely intense for most children, and many adults find it difficult to watch, too. Overall: 16/50 - But intense. Suggested rating: PG for some intense animal cruelty/attacks and suspenseful moments |
