NIGHTCRAWLER is a thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling - where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.
nudity | 1/10 None |
violence | 6/10 Despite the rating description, this film does not really contain much violence, and what is shown is not necessarily too graphic nor gory. There are a few bloody images, however. A man is seen being shot in the chest briefly. We see a man with a bleeding foot. The aftermath of a car crash is shown, with one of the victims' with a bleeding neck. He doesn't die though. We see footage of a group shooting three policeman in a fast food restaurant. The scene is brief. You don't ACTUALLY see anything graphic though. Rick is shot dead after the car chase. We see brief blood spurts and we later, see Louis taking photos of his dead body. |
profanity | 7/10 About 50 F-Words. 21 uses of 'shit.' 5 uses of 'bitch.' 7 uses of 'crap.' 2 uses of 'dick.' 1 use of 'Jesus Christ.' |
alcohol | 1/10 There is some casual drinking in a restaurant setting. |
frightening | 7/10 Louis gets stressed and starts screaming in the bathroom. There is an intense car chase towards the end of the film. The crime scenes shown can be frightening to some. A man watches people die violently and shows no emotion. These scenes are very unsettling to watch. This film has a somewhat psychological feel, and the lead character seems quite antisocial and sociopathic. Overall: 20.5/50 |
