nudity | 4/10 At the beginning, Vada says she has Hemorrhoids. When Shelley and Harry are alone in her camper he feels her back for a bra (and doesn't find one), they then share a brief kiss. It is implied that Shelley and Vada have a discussion about sex and menstruation, after 11-year-old Vada tells her that she got period for the first time. A funeral parlor director accuses the make-up artist of making a dead woman look like a "two dollar hooker". In a creative writing class for adults, a young woman recites a poem that alludes to sex and touching the body. Shelley's ex-husband asks her if she's sleeping with Harry. Harry and Shelley are seen flirting and kissing during a scene where Vada spies on them during a funeral. |
violence | 3/10 A man punches another man in the stomach. Some men get into a fist fight while playing bingo. Vada went to Thomas after she was put on make-up by Shelly, Thomas commented: "Your lips bleeding?" Vada forces Thomas J to pick his mosquito bite to make it bleed. She pricks her arm too, and they rub the blood together so they will be "blood brothers" for life. Thomas J. is stung by a swarm of bees, and dies offscreen. |

frightening | Vada accuse herself of having certain symptoms. Going from jaundiced, hemorrhoids, chicken leg stuck in her throat, and a bee sting. Her accusing herself like these symptoms might upset younger audiences. Vada collapsed falsely in one scene. During Thomas J.'s funeral Vada gets extremely emotional and has to be pulled away from the casket. This scene is extremely heavy and sad and may cause younger viewers to cry. Suggested MPAA rating: PG-13 for Thematic Elements, Some Language and Drug References. PLEASE NOTE: The film was originally rated PG-13 but was re-rated to PG on appeal by the MPAA. Parents should think of this film as a PG-13. |
