nudity | 6/10 The Moulin Rouge is a night club and brothel. Female dancers/prostitutes are seen wearing clothing that reveals cleavage and their underwear. A main character in the movie is a highly sought after prostitute. There are numerous references to her job and she wears revealing clothing. A prostitute attempts to seduce a young man. She grabs his crotch and pushes him onto a bed. She opens his trousers and is obviously impressed at the size of his genitals (no nudity). He pushes her off and she continues to shout and moan in ecstasy and grinds her body on the bed. A man attempts to rape a woman. He throws her to the ground, chases her, rips off her clothing (she wears a corset, no nudity) and throws her onto a bed. She cries and screams and he is stopped by another man. There are several scenes that involve sexually suggestive dance moves. We see a man and woman kissing passionately on multiple occasions. A man and woman are shown after sex, obviously nude underneath sheets, but nothing is seen. Sexual references throughout, however, nothing graphic. |
violence | 5/10 A man attempts to rape a woman. He throws her to the ground, chases her, rips off her clothing (she wears a corset, no nudity) and throws her onto a bed. She cries and screams and he is stopped by another man. A man shoots a gun at another man twice, and a man is threatened with a gun. A man knocks another man to the floor with a blow to the head; we see some blood trickle from the wound as it is being dressed. A man hits another man in the crotch. A man is punched in the face and dropped on a street; we see his bruised cheek. A man is punched in the face and falls back onto the ground, and a man is knocked out by a sandbag falling on his head. A woman coughs violently, gasping for air and spits out blood in several scenes; in one she is unconscious and receives a shot in the arm. A man falls through the ceiling of a man's apartment and dangles, unconscious, by his foot; another man falls from stage scaffolding, swings from a rope and slides across a stage. A woman falls unconscious from a high swing and is caught before she hits the floor. A woman imagines being violently tied to a bed. A man blows fire that nearly singes a man's hair. There are a few threats of violence (to kill a man, to destroy a dance club). |
profanity | 4/10 At least 1 use of "damn" as an exclamation. There are a few sexual references, a racial slur and some name-calling. The strongest word in the film is "whore" |
alcohol | 3/10 We see Satine holding a cigarette in a long cigarette holder, while the Duke's henchman smokes a cigar and various miscellaneous characters also smoke in several scenes. There is a party at which five main characters drink absinthe, act drunk and have hallucinations. Many people in the Moulin Rouge are drinking and appear intoxicated. |
frightening | 4/10 The Duke grabs Satine by her wrists and forces her to the floor. He then chases after her in his tower and it then appears that he's behind her, trying to rip off her clothes. He then pushes her down onto a bed, apparently ready to rape her, but a man from the play suddenly shows up and punches the Duke, rendering him unconscious. The movie deals with some heavy subject matter and young audiences might not understand it. There are many highly emotional scenes. A main character dies in her lover's arms. Very intense. This is very unsettling to watch, as is the reactions of her lover. Total: 22/50 |
