A main character in the movie is a highly sought after prostitute. There are numerous references to her job and she wears revealing clothing.

The Duke grabs Satine by her wrists and forces her to the floor. He then chases after her in his tower and it then appears that he's behind her, trying to rip off her clothes. He then pushes her down onto a bed, apparently ready to rape her, but a man from the play suddenly shows up and punches the Duke, rendering him unconscious.
The movie deals with some heavy subject matter and young audiences might not understand it.
There are many highly emotional scenes.
A main character dies in her lover's arms. Very intense. This is very unsettling to watch, as is the reactions of her lover.
