nudity | The main character is strip searched after being arrested. We see his bare buttocks. We also see a very brief glimpse of full frontal nudity when he puts his pants back on. The main character is shown showering with another male prisoner. We see part of the main character's buttocks, but the scene is dimly lit and not much is shown. The two men then kiss, but the main character declines the other man's advance and walks away before any further intimacy occurs. The main character's girlfriend exposes her breasts while visiting him in prison. Some prisoners are shown naked in a psychiatric ward. It is implied that the main character is raped by one of the guards while in prison, but this is never shown. |
violence | Many prisoners are brutally and savagely beaten by guards and the sadistic warden. These beatings are sometimes off-screen and sometimes on-screen, and the men are often seen bloody and injured afterwards. Some angry behavior and fighting on the prison grounds. These happen many times, as the prison is a very rowdy and bleak place. The main character is tormented throughout the movie. Two little kids are shown how to "discipline" prisoners. The warden beats some kids violently with a belt at their feet. A man attacks and brutally beats another man in a violent frenzy, then graphically bites out his tongue. This scene is EXTREMELY brutal. A man is killed by being pushed and having his head impaled on a steel peg (Not that graphic). A man is strung up by his ankles on a torture rack and severely beaten with a belt. A cat is shown dead, strangled. Lots of threats are made. No actual gore (other than the tongue biting scene), but when violent scenes happen, they are very cruel and bloody. |
profanity | - 23 uses of the F-word - 14 uses of Shit - 1 use of Damn - 1 use of Hell - 2 uses of Bastard - 7 uses of Ass - 1 use of Asshole - 2 uses of Goddamn |
alcohol | The film is centered around a young man who attempts to smuggle Hashish into the United States. Many characters are seen smoking cigarettes. A man is seen injecting codeine and implied to be a drug addict. Alcohol is shown. |
frightening | This movie is very intense and unsettling. The atmosphere is dark and brutal, such to be expected of a corrupted prison. A shocking scream is heard at night. The scream may frighten, or surprise the viewer. There is a famous chase scene at the beginning of the movie, but it's not that intense. Although, when we notice why the main character is sweating and acting all anxious at the very beginning of this film, we start to fear for his destiny. Many negative and emotional moments happen in this movie. They are all told, shown and heard diabolically. The scene where the main character Billy Hayes meets his father is VERY emotional. The scene where the main character finds out that he has 50 days left, but is told that he has actually 50 years left, until he gets out of prison is very unsettling and sad. He later starts to talk vulgarly in the courtroom. This scene is famous for it's nightmarishly realistic approach and the actors are spot-on. This movie tells of a man who gets caught smuggling drugs and is thrown into a world that is equivalent to hell. The part where the main character attacks Rifki is one of the most brutal and emotional scenes in any film. He screams, beats him down, destroys furniture, goes crazy and laughs, whilst tormenting him. The music track makes this intense scene even more disturbing. To top it all, he bites Rifkis tongue out and screams, as the music turns chilling. Very bloody and disturbing. Viewer discretion STRONGLY advised!!! Later, the main character is sent to an asylum, this scene is extremely unsettling, as it shows realistically what a real asylum is like (at that time). He finds a rapist there, who is rather creepy. |
