A coming of age story about a boy and his family who overcame great challenges by turning Disney animated movies into a language to express love, loss, kinship and brotherhood. At three years old, a chatty, energetic little boy named Owen Suskind ceased to speak, disappearing into autism with apparently no way out. Almost four years passed and the only stimuli that engaged Owen were Disney films. Then one day, his father donned a puppet—Iago, the wisecracking parrot from Aladdin—and asked “what’s it like to be you?” And poof! Owen replied, with dialogue from the movie. Life, Animated tells the remarkable story of how Owen found in Disney animation a pathway to language and a framework for making sense of the world.

frightening 'Life, Animated' is a documentary about Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child due to autism. One day, his family found a way to communicate with him by immersing themselves in the world of Disney animated films. The themes addressed in this film should be suited for children below 13 years of age. Said themes also generally have a low sense of threat or menace, and are justified by context. The film focuses on Owen and his family's journey in dealing with Owen's autism. It details his parent's struggles in trying to communicate with Owen, who was completely silent as a child. Owen also recounts his loneliness and how he was bullied in school. However, the film has an uplifting tone throughout, portraying Owen's positive attitude and his family's unending support for him. Despite his struggles, Owen is shown to able to lead a happy and fulfilling life. Special attention should be paid to the film's impact on children. Official MPAA Rating: Rated PG for thematic elements, and language including a suggestive reference
