violence | One of the main characters brutally beats a German prisoner for carrying a flag, as well as another prisoner intervening. Most of the prisoners are killed by exploding landmines which occur several times throughout the story. The circumstances include careless actions, booby traps, and suicide. One such victim initially survives such a blast with his arms blown off and howling in agony. He is reported to have died at a military hospital. A dog is killed by a land mine that the prisoners apparently missed on an officially cleared beach. Many of the prisoners contract food poisoning from smuggled contaminated food and are vomiting continually. One such soldier vomits particularly violently while at work on the minefield and detonates a land mine. Furthermore, this forcing prisoners into this kind of labor is a war crime under the Geneva Conventions which state that Prisoners of War are not supposed to be forced to do dangerous labor. |
frightening | Most of the scenes of land mine defusing are extremely tense with detonations happening often when least expected. When the Sergeant's dog is killed by a land mine on a beach that was marked officially cleared, the grieving and angry Sergeant accuses his prisoners of missing one and forces them to march with arms linked up and down the minefield to test the hard way if they missed any other land mines by risking stepping on another missed land mine. Obviously, this is a terrifying experience for the prisoners. |
