Josh is verbally abused by his older step-brothers and, to a lesser extent, his own father, leading to a big emotional scene at the dinner table. Josh and Sam's mother is getting married to a man they're not particularly fond of, and don't take the news lightly when she reveals she's going to live with him in Europe for a year. Josh lies his way into a big pickle, claiming another woman to be his mother and an old boyfriend believing himself to be his father. When it all goes south, the man violently attacks Josh, resulting in him getting knocked senseless with a pool cue. Josh believes he has killed the man and panics about possibly being given the death penalty. There is much tension between Sam and Josh, as the latter continously tries to explain he made everything up, but he won't believe him. They encounter a rather intimidating cop at a rest stop in Utah, whom later chases them in his car to the railroad tracks. Sam scurries under a moving train, narrowly missing being killed. He and Josh get into a big shouting match afterwards. Sam runs away, or rather drives away in the car one morning. Josh finds it, but not him...until later. Josh and Sam have an emotional goodbye at the airport... and then an emotional reunion at the end of the film
