nudity | 2/10 A painting of a nude woman is seen a couple times. A couple kisses five times. |
violence | 4/10 There are some scenes of semi-mild child abuse in the first twenty minutes of the film. The main character's childhood is a bleak one, characterized by sadness and little love. * A boy is shown carrying a sword, very likely real, and searching for a young girl and taunting her, asking, "Where are you, rat?" He finds her, and hits her across the face with a book, which causes her to hit her head against the wood frame of the bay window she is hiding in. She then attacks him, tackles him to the ground, and beats him repeatedly until a servant comes and pries her off of him. The scene can be interpreted somewhat comically as a young girl, about 9 or 10, is beating a teenage boy. However, the scene is meant to be taken seriously. * Another girl at Lowood School is brutally caned on her back in public humiliation. |
profanity | 2/10 A few uses of "damn" and "hell." |
alcohol | Mr. Rochester smokes a cigar in a few scenes, but it is not a major plot point. |
frightening | A young girl is locked in a room that is rumored to be haunted, when a cloud of black smoke shoots out of the chimney, she screams and beats on the door, finally knocking herself out. The burned residence of Mr. Rochester is shown as the aftermath of his insane wife's violence. Rated PG-13 for: Violence, Adult Content.(HBO advisory) |
