nudity | Maggie asks Willie Mossop to kiss her after they become engaged (which they do at her insistence.) He is so embarrassed that he can only kiss her on the cheek. She giggles. Implied offscreen sex between Willie and Maggie on their wedding night, though Willie is not sure that he loves her yet. He prepares to enter his bedroom to the strains of military music on the soundtrack, as if he were about to fight a battle. (This is played for laughs.) The next morning, Willie has a very contented look on his face and kisses Maggie as she fixes breakfast. She returns the kiss, although she continues to act businesslike, but by the end it is obvious the two have fallen in love. They kiss again very near the end of the film after all the business arrangements have been made. |
alcohol | Hobson (played by Charles Laughton) is an alcoholic and is drunk for much of the film. |
frightening | Hobson experiences some delirium tremens. He hallucinates a giant squirrel dressed in a suit, as well as a swarm of bugs. |
