The theme of pedophilia is very disturbing, the scene involving the father talking to his son about disturbing sexual things (including how he raped two children) is intense to sit through.
Several of the characters in the film have sexual or social dysfunctions, which leads them to behavior that most people would find disturbing, for example making obscene phone calls, masturbating to teenagers' magazines, rape, murder, and suicide. Most of the suspense in the film lies in its complete emotional bleakness.
