violence | A man causes damage in a shop with a baseball bat. Two gang members threaten a man with a butterfly knife which is flicked open, twirled and shown in a glamourous way complete with sound effects. A man beats two gang members with a baseball bat. There is a drive-by shooting in which a gang member leaning out of a car window shoots innocent by-standers and property. A man shoots a gang member in the back of his leg, bullet impact and wound shown in close-up. A man accidentally holds the customers and staff at a fast food restaurant hostage at gun point. He takes out a gun to threaten the manager of the shop and accidentally shoots the gun (nobody is harmed). This terrifies the other customers but he is very apologetic and is not shown as malicious at all. At the food restaurant, a man asks a lady how she likes the food with the gun in his hand. She bends over to throw up. We don't really see anything. Someone shoots a public telephone so no-one else can use it. A man stabs someone in the shoulder with a butterfly knife, the man removes the knife and it has blood on the blade. Someone blows a construction site up with a rocket launcher with the help of a child. A man shoots a golf cart and lets an old man die of a heart attack. Foster accidentally takes a young girl hostage at gun point. He hides near a pool belonging to a wealthy family and ushers them into a shelter, holding a young girl to comfort her. The family are notably distressed and the father offers to be taken hostage instead which greatly offends Foster, who says he wasn't trying to hurt anybody. He releases the girl who he had not noticed was afraid and is once again very apologetic. A cop is shot in the side. A man is shot in the chest and killed. There are many scenes showing guns, the baseball bat and the butterfly knife along with violent scenes showing their use. |
profanity | There is blasphemy, 30 or so uses of the 'f' word, and other cursing. |
alcohol | Mr Lee goes to light up a cigarette while reporting the attack on his shop to the police. He is advised that it is a no smoking area. When advised that Foster has a bad temper, the police officer's next question is "Does he drink?" followed by "Do drugs?" The answer is no. Two homeless characters meet up. One has a bottle of booze in his back pocket. He gets it out as he sits with his companion while the camera cuts away. A golfer smokes a cigar. |
frightening | Falling Down is an intense film from start to finish showing a seemingly ordinary man mentally deteriorate and lash out against society in increasingly violent ways. There are several scenes where innocent people are held hostage at gun point in everyday settings. Falling Down deals with very adult issues and concerns. |
