Sam Bowden is a small-town corporate attorney. Max Cady is a tattooed, cigar-smoking, bible-quoting, psychotic rapist. What do they have in common? Fourteen years, ago Sam was a public defender assigned to Max Cady's rape trial, and he made a serious error: he hid a document from his illiterate client that could have gotten him acquitted. Now, the cagey, bibliophile Cady has been released, and he intends to teach Sam Bowden and his family a thing or two about loss.
nudity | Max Cady explains that when he went to prison he was held down and non-consentially sodomised. A man pulls a woman top down and starts kissing a woman against her will. He then kisses her breast and attempts to rape her, but ends up not doing so. A man flirts with and eventually kisses an underaged girl. Nothing else happens though. |
violence | It is said several times that a man beat and raped a 16 year old girl. A man handcuffs a woman to a bed, dislocates her shoulder and bites a chunk of flesh from her cheek. Very bloody, but only shown briefly. (As mentioned above, we are told that the woman was raped afterwards but it is only mentioned, not shown) A man is attacked by three other men, before single-handedly beating them himself. Throughout the scene, blood is apparent on all of them. A man is strangled with piano wire, shown with blood trickling down his throat. He attempts to raise a revolver, but the attacker moves it to his victim and fires. This is shown off-screen, but with a very large amount of blood spraying briefly. Two dead people are found, both with large pools of blood around them. The camera shows a brief close up of a wound inflicted by piano wire of one. A man slips and falls in one of the pools of blood. A man is set on fire with lighter fluid. He is shown later with grotesque wounds inflicted on his face by the flames. |
profanity | About 9 nine uses of the f-ck (sometimes used sexually). 3 uses of b-tch (two of them hard to hear). Many uses of son of a b-tch. And other standard profanities are used a few times such as sh-t, bastard, ass, damn, etc. |
alcohol | it is stated that a daughter of the two characters had smoked reefer at school, it is shown. |
frightening | There is a scene in which a man handcuffs a woman to bed and bites off a piece of her cheek before he begins brutally raping her offscreen. Rape is brought up several times though never shown on screen. Frequently and very intense, with sustained terrorization throughout the film. Cape Fear isn't overly graphic and the rapes are off-screen. Not a ridiculously violent film but it is very unpleasant. OFFICIAL MPAA - Rated R for strong violence, and for language. OFFICIAL BBFC - (18): strong violence, sexual violence, strong language. |
