nudity | 4/10 Ripley is shown laying in bed (about 10 minutes into the film) and begins to sit up - showing most of her breast but no nipple... then shortly after that she is shown getting out of bed; she is naked, but we only see a back view of her side from about her mid thigh up to her shoulder (no private areas are exposed) Ripley examines a 10 year old's corpse about 15 minutes into film. It is in a non-sexual way but the girl is uncovered and there are close up views of the chest area some may possibly feel should not be shown. Ripley is in the shower about 26min into film, but nothing is shown but her head and shoulders Implied sex between a man and a woman; they are shown in bed together apparently after sex, but they are both completely clothed. (about 32 min into film) about 40 min into film, A group of 4 men hold down a woman bent over a side rail to attempt to rape her - (nothing explicit, they only show a man cutting her belt off from behind her but she is rescued before anything else can happen) |
violence | Gory and intense. |
profanity | 10/10 Almost pervasive strong language, including frequent usage of the 'f' word; the theatrical version has 85 uses of it and the special edition has 114 uses of it. Besides blasphemy, there is also use of the 's' word, 'd' word, and others. |
alcohol | 5/10 few of the characters smoke; casual drinking in one scene. A woman complains of feeling unwell and p####d off. A doctor then offers her what he refers to as a "special cocktail", meaning a morphine injection. He then tells her about his morphine addiction and a disturbing experience he had in his profession while attending casualties whilst intoxicated. |
frightening | 8/10 The menacing and inhumane appearance/behaviour of the alien makes the film very intense and frightening. There are many scary scenes where the alien attacks characters and chases them through the dark prison corridors. The fact that Ripley has an alien inside her and she wants to die makes this movie very emotional and will probably upset many viewers. However, despite the emotional and disturbing tone to this, it also conveys a very positive message about courage and self-sacrifice. There is a scene where Ripley falls into molten steel with arms outstretched as a religious metaphor to Christ's suffering and martyrdom. 35.5/50 Rated R for language and monster violence (DVD and theatrical release) Rated R for strong sci-fi action violence and gore, some grotesque images and language (Blu-ray release) Ages 15+ |
