nudity | A man sketches a sleeping woman. The woman rolls over, briefly revealing her bare breast. Many sketches of nude women can be seen. Many scenes imply sex. Two people seen nude during a fantasy sequence. Their bodies are wrapped around each other so only their buttocks can be briefly seen. A man floats naked in a lake. His genitals are in heavy shadow and are not visible. Completely nude women wearing white body paint are seen. Full frontal nudity (including breasts and genitals) is visible, however the white paint makes it very difficult to make out anything explicit. Bare buttocks are seen very briefly when young men receive physical examinations. Suggestive dialogue, clothing and dancing throughout. |
violence | Molotov cocktails and bullets fly during a Detroit riot. Caught looting, a man is shot by a National Guardsman. During protests, many people (including Jude and Lucy) are hit, kicked and/or bludgeoned by police officers. Once or twice, blood is seen streaming down faces. The protestors throw objects and punch the officers. A man and his cohorts are seen assembling pipe bombs. alcohol | The Beatle At another party, "pink punch" causes everybody to have a psychedelic experience, complete with swirling colors and distorted visuals. By the time their drug trip is done, they're dazed and confused, miles from home. Max is given a shot by a nurse. (The syringe is filled with a blue substance in the shape of a naked girl.) We see his wide-eyed reaction to the drug. Beer and other forms of alcohol are also staples. Max and his friends drink beer on the rooftop of a college building and use a beer bottle as a tee for their golf balls. A very frustrated Sadie guzzles strawlJude smokes them constantly.. |
frightening | Scenes of Jude smashing strawberries to make art--they later appear to be bleeding. These scenes are intercut with Vietnam War footage. Themes of regret, youth, the Vietnam war, love, racism, the assassination of Martin Luther King, death of a child, freedom, patriotic duty, success, bravery, heroism, death of a loved one, friendship, narcissism, leaving home, hate, dropping out of college, privilege, young people going to war, adventure, military draft, deportation, heartbreak, dreams, life choices, imperialism, jealousy, soldiers, and sexual orientation are all explored in the film. The scene that involves "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" may appear to be quite surreal. |
