This film is a parody of Cecil B. DeMille's Carmen of 1915. A gypsy seductress is sent to sway a goofy officer to allow a smuggling run. In 1916, after Chaplin had moved to Mutual, Essanay reworked the film into a four-reel version called Burlesque on Carmen adding discarded footage and new scenes.
