Young Danny Madigan is a big fan of Jack Slater, a larger-than-life action hero played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. When his best friend, Nick the projectionist, gives him a magic ticket to the new Jack Slater film, Danny is transported into Slater's world, where the good guys always win. One of Slater's enemies, Benedict the hitman, gets hold of the ticket and ends up in Danny's world, where he realises that if he can kill Schwarzenegger, Slater will be no more. Slater and Danny must travel back and stop him.

violence
The violence is tongue-in-cheek and pastiches the action genre. An escaped mental patient is thrown off of a roof by a gunshot blast. In retaliation, he grabs Slater's son by the shirt collar and drags him along, killing them both. Slater's friend is found beaten half to death. An explosion kills two police officers and wounds Slater. A car chase ends with Slater killing of dozens of criminals. One scene in particular has a stick of dynamite exploding an ice cream truck, killing one of the bad guys when a cone his in the back of the head and impales him. Thugs invade Slater's estate while he's gone, holding the two people hostage. Slater's daughter beats a man to death with her bare hands. Slater them initiates a large shootout that results in the death of most of the thugs. When in the real world, the main bad guy kills several innocent pedestrians. Slater kills a bad guy on a theater roof by electricuting him. After killing of the lead villian, Slater escapes seriously wounded, but manages to survive.
profanity
Lots of mild profanity scattered throughout the film. "F" word is used.
"Cocksuckin'" is used once, which is surprising from a PG-13 movie, but it's said so quickly you most likely won't pick up on it at first.

Slater is seen smoking cigars continually throughout the film.

The scene where Slater's son is killed may upset some younger viewers.
