nudity | Suggested MPAA rating: Rated R for pervasive language, violence, a scene of sexuality and some drug content After Det. Bouchard eats dinner with Det. Ward, his son and sister at Ward's home, Bouchard heads off with Ward's sister. The following scene flashes back and forth every few seconds between the suspect breaking into Det. Ward's house and Bouchard and Ward's sister having intercourse. You only see silhouettes and low-lit wide angles of the couple as they make-out, then copulate, but it is clear what is happening. It is a shame because the break-in scene is intense and gripping. It's not possible to try to show the break in but not the bedroom scene as they flip back and forth too quickly. |
violence | The opening scene depicts a serial killer tattooing his currently live victim until he gains consciousness. Then the victim pleads with the killer to let him go, to no avail. After playing with his victim for a minute or so, the killer goes behind the victim and swings a stick or pool cue at the victim's head. You see him wind up and see the wound of the now deceased victim, but not very much actual gore. However, it is a quite violent scene meant to shock the viewer. At the end of the movie, Det. Ward is shot in the shoulder while he is wearing a kevlar vest. He drops, but gets back up in a minute to coach Det. Bouchard on how to disarm the bomb attached to Bouchard's daughter. The conclusion of the story has Det. Ward plant the killer's own bomb into his pocket. The killer runs off down the pier thinking that he has gotten away... until 10 seconds pass and the wide angle shows a mess of meat exploding. You see nothing that can be identified as human or even the killer one second, mess the next. It is clearly implied, but nowhere near as disturbing as the first scene of the film. |
profanity | There is swearing in French throughout the film "calice", "tabarnac", "de cris", "maudit", etc. In one scene Det. Bouchard explicitly explains the relative levels of severity of the French swears he uses, and gives their English equivalents: F, Fing, MF, Gdmn, Crp, B |
alcohol | The detectives search a house in Quebec for information about the killer. In the basement is a marijuana grow-op. Bouchard triggers a trap that ignites the grow-op. Consequently the detectives are high when they are summoned to Bouchard's Chief for a down-dressing. They joke, "have the munchies", forget what they are doing and giggle through the scene. We are not specifically told they are high, so it is possible that some young or naive viewers may not realize why the detectives are acting so strangely. Bouchard smokes a lot of cigarettes throughout |
frightening | Although an action comedy, the violence can be disturbing to some people. |
