The Last 5 Years by Tony award winning composer and lyricist Jason Robert Brown is a musical deconstruction of a love affair and a marriage taking place over a five year period. Jamie Wellerstein is a young, talented up and coming Jewish novelist who falls in love with Cathy Hiatt, a Shiksa Goddess struggling actress. Their story is told almost entirely through songs using an intercutting time line device; all of Cathy's songs begin at the end of their marriage and move backwards in time to the beginning of their love affair while Jamie's songs start at the beginning of their affair and move forward to the end of their marriage. They meet in the center when Jamie proposes .
nudity | Early on in the movie, Jamie and Cathy are shown in the moments before sex. Kissing, rubbing, and slight disrobing occur on-screen before the scene cuts. Nothing much happens until the end, when in a moment of weakness, Jamie cheats on Cathy. The scene portrays him waking up with the woman and putting his clothes back on (nothing graphic shown) This song also includes graphic sexual lines (eg, take me inside you). In an earlier scene, Jamie sings about how easy it is to cheat on his wife now that he's married. |
violence | N/A |
profanity | One forcefully said "f" word in the heat of an argument. Other profanities include, "s---", "son of a b--ch", "what the h---", the "d" word and "half-a--ed" are sung. In the original musical, there were many more f-bombs sung, but they were toned down so the film would receive a PG-13 rating. |
alcohol | Jamie is seen drinking a lot in a few scenes. |
frightening | Nothing frightening. The breakdown of their relationship is, at times, very upsetting. Knowing that the work is based off the writer's real life story makes it even more depressing. |
