Dr. Michael Cayle thought leaving the chaotic life-style of New York City behind for the quiet, small town of Ashborough would bring his family closer together. Soon after arriving, however, he discovers the town's deepest secret: a terrifying and controlling race of creatures that live amongst the darkness in the forest behind his home .
nudity | During a dream sequence a man and a woman are shown having intercourse. She is on top of him fully nude, she is shown from the side and front though arms and set dressing are always strategically blocking any explicit content. |
violence | A woman is shown suddenly who has a face that appears to have been mangled by a vicious animal. The scene is not meant to suggest those with physical deformities are monsters but as a shock to the unsuspecting main character. A goat is wounded and bleeds on the ground. Large blood smears feature in several scenes. A woman is shown standing in a torn dress and covered in blood. It appears that her organs may be exposed near her stomach. She is shown again lying in a road and again lying on a stone slab. A woman pours blood from her mouth in a slow drool. A man smashes another man's head in with a rudimentary club. The camera quickly cuts away. A wild man has his throat slit. Blood spurts profusely. A man is gutted by a group of creatures. Most of the gore is implied. A man smashes a creature's face in with a rock. Very little is shown. |
profanity | One instance of f*ck. |
alcohol | A man is shown drinking a glass of hard liquor. |
frightening | Unknown creatures prowl the edges of the shadows throughout the film. Their appearance once revealed is a profane mockery of the human condition: lithe almost emaciated, filthy, their faces resemble skulls, and they go about in a hunched lopping fashion. Several fairly explicit surgery scenes, including a woman's stomach being sliced open for a c section. |
