In a world difficult to comprehend, Nathan struggles to connect with those around him - most of all his loving mother - but finds comfort in numbers. When Nathan is taken under the wing of unconventional and anarchic teacher, Mr. Humphreys, the pair forge an unusual friendship and Nathan's talents win him a place on the UK team at the International Mathematics Olympiad. From suburban England to bustling Taipei and back again, Nathan builds complex relationships as he is confronted by the irrational nature of love .
nudity | A teacher says his "dick stopped working". Later when a woman is kissing him he says he can't "go that far" referring to his erectile dysfunction that is stated earlier. A man and a woman kiss several times as they enter an awkward relationship. A teenage girl is interrupted playing piano and tells the boy she was just "practicing my fingering". She gets an awkward look on her face implying that she recognizes the double entendre, and says to the boy, "go ahead, laugh". A teenage girl is staying with a boy's family, and as his mom prepares a bed the boy asks (in his roundabout way) if they can sleep in the same room, although on different mattresses. The mom smiles and agrees to it. Nothing happens. A teenage girl goes into a boy's room at night and asks if she can stay. She surprises him by getting into bed with him under the covers (wearing a dress). They awkwardly kiss each other several times. |
violence | A child is seen briefly stabbing their finger during a maths exam with a compass. Blood is seen but Minimal detail. A fatal car accident is seen twice. Blood is seen dripping from the victim. A child is briefly seen self harming his arm with a compass. No detail is seen, but the scars are shown afterwards. |
profanity | A few each of fucks, shits, dicks, "arses", etc. Near the beginning a teacher tells a boy to shake his hand because "it's what fucking men do". The boy then asks "What's fucking?" The same teacher later tells his doctor that his "dick stopped working". The teacher does most of the swearing in the movie. |
alcohol | A teacher catches some students smoking a marijuana joint. After berating them and confiscating the joint, he smokes it himself. The teacher smoke another joint later in the movie. The same teacher has a prescription pills addiction, and is seen shopping online pharmacies for his drugs. He tries to blame his drug use on his MS, but is told by a counselor/doctor character that he needs to go to AA for his addictions. The teacher does not suffer any consequences for his drug use, but at the end he goes to an AA meeting. |
